We are a local plumbing company who everyday attend many emergency call outs where a DIY er has attempted to fix a plumbing problem.
We are not saying that you should not have a go, We are just stating that mains water can be a bigger plumbing job than you may at first realise.
Thats not to say that all plumbing jobs are out of reach for DIYers. In fact we are reguarly called out to jobs that people could probably fix themselves.
For example a leaking waste pipe under the sink could be easily fixed by someone with a little plumbing knowledge.
The first thing to do is to establish where it is leaking from. It is usually because a u bend has been removed to clear a blockage and has not been re attached correctly but it can also be because it has been knocked or the seal has worn down or split.
Therefore the first thing to do is to disconnect the pipe from where it is leaking from.
The next stage is to check that the seal is intact and a tight fit for the pipe it has come off of.
Place the nut over the pipe and then replace the seal on the connecting pipe with the flat bit against the nut.
Push the other end or the u bend in to place and tighten the nut with your hand. Ensure that it goes on straight and do not use any tools to tighten it.
If it still leaks when finger tight then you have an issue with the thread on the nut or the seal. It will do no good to overtighten it and the seal will not last.
Also we would recommend that you do not use sealants. If you require silicone or equivalent to prevent it from leaking then you are doing something wrong.
If after all this you still have a leak then it’s time to call us. As professional, experienced plumbers we will sort out all of your plumbing problems.
